UN Nurse

As the pandemic is accelerating, and as experienced in other countries, cases among UN personnel and dependents are increasing.  The pandemic is affecting mainly the Manzini -Mbabane corridor where most UN personnel reside. Most of the cases in-country are aged between 20 and 49 years. As of 13 August 2020, 93% of the COVID-19 cases in Eswatini had asymptomatic or mild disease on diagnosis and, as per the new COVID-19 government guidelines, have to be managed through home isolation till recovery. The vast majority of UN national personnel do not have adequate space for self-isolation at home. A few staff members who recently developed symptoms similar to COVID-19 (cleared after testing) or had been in contact with individuals whose COVID-19 condition was confirmed requested to be given access to the facility in order to protect their families and community. Hence, a UN isolation house would be a good option to contain the virus in space, prevent the spread to other UN staff members and their dependents, and ensure adequate monitoring/surveillance of our personnel. Establishing and maintaining a safe and healthy Isolation House for UN personnel and dependents are a priority for the UN Country Team (UNCT) in Eswatini in order to prepare for COVID-19 infections that may affect the UN community in Eswatini.

The Nurse performs the functions under the immediate supervision of the UN COVID-19 Coordination Team with regards to technical matters only and the overall supervision of the UNDP for all administrative matters.

Clinical Technical Duties:

Within delegated authority, the Nurse shall be responsible for the following duties:

• Attend the UN Isolation Care Centre on a full-time basis;
• Attend to UN Personnel/dependents with COVID -19 related symptoms or refer them accordingly to an appropriate medical facility;
• Liaise with other health facilities in the country to ascertain opportunities for referrals and continuity of care and treatment, as needed;
• Respond to emergency calls during and outside office hours when necessary, examine client or refer to relevant facility accordingly;
• Ensure effective liaison between patient and private doctor, paramedics, family members, and colleagues as appropriate;
• Document case findings.
• Facilitates referral to the UN designated physician, or facility as required.
• Assist in providing medical support during evacuation and repatriation;
• Assist in maintaining records of patients’ medical data, including on consultations and treatment;
• Maintain strict confidentiality with regards to patient’s medical records, patient management and treatment;
• Perform medication, injection, as needed;
• Performs other related duties, as required.

Administrative duties:

• Maintain the UN Isolation Care Centre in good order and keep the inventory of medical supplies and equipment up-to-date;
• Coordinate and supervise the work of the Cleaner;
• Check equipment and supplies on a daily, weekly, monthly and yearly basis and maintain them in working order;

Education:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing and/or related areas.
• Recognized additional training in primary health care and midwifery is desirable;
• HIV/AIDS/COVID-19 Management training is desirable
• National registration and license is a requirement

Experience:

• Minimum 4 years of continuous clinical experience in nursing preferably in a multicultural environment;
• Experience in Trauma and Emergency care is desirable;
• Experience in the usage of computers and office software packages (MS Word, Excel, etc.) is desirable

Language:

• Proficiency in English. Working knowledge of other UN language desirable
