Business Development Consultancy
Strengthening Income-Generating Activities (IGAs) of the Baphalali Eswatini Red Cross Society
Main Purpose of the Assignment
BERCS is seeking to engage a qualified consultant or consultancy firm to strengthen its financial sustainability by developing commercially viable, mission-aligned revenue streams that support and safeguard its primary humanitarian mandate. The consultant will help BERCS build a robust portfolio of income-generating activities (IGAs) to diversify funding for its humanitarian services, while ensuring all recommendations remain consistent with the Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, BERCS’s role as a National Society and the statutory regulations of the country.
Duration
The consultancy is expected to run for 5 months from contract signature, structured as follows: assessment and market analysis; identification of opportunities and business planning; strategy and policy development; and capacity building, partnerships and handover.
Key Responsibilities and Scope of Work
- Conduct a comprehensive assessment of existing IGAs (property rentals, First Aid Kits, First Aid commercial training and ambulance services, canteens, etc.) and identify improvement opportunities.
- Facilitate stakeholder consultations and identify 4–6 commercially viable, socially responsible income streams aligned with BERCS’ capacity, mission, and reputation.
- Conduct feasibility and market validation, assessing both financial viability and strategic/ethical fit.
- Develop 2–3 detailed business plans for selected IGAs, and a three-year revenue-generation strategy (2027–2029).
- Review and update BERCS’ Resource Mobilisation (RM) policy and strategy.
- Train and coach key staff in resource mobilisation, financial planning, business management, and governance.
- Develop partnership tools.
Education, Experience and Competencies Required
- Advanced degree (MBA or equivalent) in Business Administration, Finance, Economics, or a related field (an advantage, not mandatory).
- Proven experience in business development and revenue generation.
- Experience supporting similar initiatives such as special purpose entities, or other mission-driven organisations in developing sustainable income-generating activities.
- Strong understanding of the local business environment, market dynamics, and regulatory framework relevant to IGA and social enterprise development in Eswatini; partnerships with local experts are an advantage for regional/international firms.
- Strong skills in market analysis, financial modelling, and strategy development.
- Demonstrated experience in partnership development and stakeholder engagement.
- Ability to balance commercial opportunities with organisational mission, values, and reputational considerations.
- Strong facilitation, coaching, and capacity-building skills.
- Excellent communication and report-writing skills.
