Overview
UWC Waterford Kamhlaba is seeking a dedicated and experienced Head of Residence & Resident Nurse to provide leadership, pastoral care, student wellbeing support, and professional healthcare services within the boarding residence.
This high-visibility dual-role position serves as the primary parental figure for approximately 140 international students from 68 countries and plays a critical role in ensuring a safe, supportive, and nurturing residential environment. The successful candidate will combine professional nursing expertise with strong residential leadership and safeguarding responsibilities.

Core Requirement: Daily Presence & Availability
- Maintain a highly visible and approachable presence within the hostel community.
- Be readily available to students as a trusted and immediate point of contact.
- Reside on campus to enable prompt response to emergencies and student needs at all times.
Key Performance Areas
1. Student Safety & Exeat Management
- Oversee and administer the residence Exeat system.
- Monitor student sign-outs, sign-ins, overnight leave, and travel arrangements.
- Conduct student roll calls and room inspections.
- Ensure accountability for student whereabouts.
- Develop and enforce guidelines governing student movement and conduct.
- Respond effectively to emergencies and behavioural incidents.
2. Medical Care & Student Health
- Provide professional nursing care and first-line medical support.
- Conduct health assessments and maintain confidential medical records.
- Administer medication according to prescribed medical protocols.
- Monitor students with chronic medical conditions and develop care plans.
- Coordinate medical appointments, referrals, and emergency healthcare services.
- Promote preventative healthcare, hygiene, mental wellness, and emotional resilience.
3. Residence Operations & Facility Management
- Conduct regular inspections of residence facilities and student rooms.
- Maintain high standards of cleanliness, safety, hygiene, and presentation.
- Report and follow up on maintenance and repair requirements.
- Liaise with housekeeping, maintenance, security, catering, and support departments.
- Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations.
- Support initiatives that improve operational efficiency and the student experience.
4. Pastoral Care & Communication
- Build supportive and meaningful relationships with students.
- Provide guidance and support for emotional, behavioural, and wellbeing concerns.
- Utilize conflict resolution and restorative practices where appropriate.
- Maintain regular communication with parents and guardians.
- Collaborate with academic staff, counsellors, healthcare providers, and school leadership.
5. Safeguarding & Child Protection
- Act as a safeguarding lead within the boarding environment.
- Ensure compliance with safeguarding and child protection policies.
- Identify, document, and report safeguarding concerns.
- Maintain strict confidentiality and professional boundaries.
- Participate in safeguarding awareness and training programmes.
6. Staff Supervision & Administration
- Supervise and coordinate residence support staff.
- Support staff induction, training, and performance management.
- Maintain accurate student records, medical files, incident reports, and communication logs.
- Prepare reports for the Director of Residences and school leadership.
- Ensure secure management of sensitive information.
Qualifications & Experience
Essential Requirements
- Diploma or Degree in Nursing from a recognised institution.
- Current registration and valid practising licence with the relevant Nursing Council.
- Minimum of 5 yearsâ post-qualification nursing experience.
- Minimum of 3 yearsâ experience in a boarding school, educational institution, student residence, youth development environment, or related pastoral care setting.
- Current First Aid, CPR, and Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Demonstrated knowledge of safeguarding and child protection practices.
- Strong computer literacy, including MS Office and electronic record-keeping systems.
- Valid driverâs licence.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelorâs Degree in Nursing, Public Health, Healthcare Management, Education, Psychology, Social Work, or Counselling.
- Qualification or certification in Counselling, Child and Youth Care, Mental Health, or Pastoral Care.
- Experience working in an international school or multicultural environment.
- Leadership or supervisory experience in a boarding or residential setting.
- Training in safeguarding, trauma-informed practice, restorative practices, or adolescent wellbeing.
