1. Research Data Processor

Department: Technical Services — Research Unit
Location: Simunye
Reports to: Crops Agronomist

Purpose of the role

To support agricultural research programmes by accurately capturing, verifying, organising, and maintaining research data and records, ensuring reliable information for analysis, reporting, and decision-making.

Key responsibilities

• Capture and maintain data from field trials, laboratory analyses, crop assessments, and related research activities.
• Check data for completeness, accuracy, consistency, and compliance with procedures.
• Maintain secure, current, and accessible research databases, records, and documentation.
• Prepare datasets, reports, presentations, and other research outputs.
• Track and record research samples; assist with distributing findings and recommendations.
• Maintain confidentiality and provide administrative and operational support to the Research Wing.

Minimum requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Agronomy, or a related discipline.
• Basic computer training, including proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and relevant applications.
• At least one year’s relevant experience in data capture, data management, agricultural research, research administration, or a related area.

Added advantages

• Certificate in Computer Applications, Database Management, Research Data Management, or Statistical Data Processing.
• Experience with agricultural, field-trial, laboratory, or production data.
• Experience using databases, spreadsheets, and data-management systems.

2. Irrigation Engineer

Department: Technical Services
Location: Simunye
Reports to: Head: Extension & Technical Services

Purpose of the role

To provide irrigation and water-resources technical support to the sugar industry; conduct irrigation research; and oversee relevant information systems and databases within Technical Services.

Key responsibilities

• Advise growers and industry stakeholders on irrigation systems, water management, and performance improvement.
• Lead irrigation research, field trials, and evaluations of irrigation, drainage, and water-efficiency technologies.
• Review irrigation and drainage designs, installations, and commissioning for compliance with industry standards.
• Support sustainable water-resource management through scheduling, audits, system evaluations, and climate-adaptation initiatives.
• Manage irrigation databases; analyse production and harvesting data; prepare reports and statistics.
• Share technical information through reports, presentations, newsletters, and stakeholder forums.
• Prepare and manage annual work programmes and budgets for the Irrigation Section.
• Represent the sugar industry on water, energy, climate, and environmental matters.
• Supervise, develop, and manage Irrigation Section staff.

Minimum requirements

• MSc in Irrigation Engineering or Agricultural Engineering.
• Strong ICT and relevant computer-application skills.
• At least five years’ experience in irrigation and water-management research, data analysis, and technical reporting.

Required experience areas

• Water-resource assessment, field water management, and irrigation scheduling.
• Planning, design, implementation, and rehabilitation of irrigation infrastructure.
• Operation, maintenance, and performance evaluation of irrigation systems.
• Preparation of technical designs, drawings, and project documentation.
• Supervision of field staff and collaboration with growers, suppliers, and researchers.

Added advantage

• Senior Certificate in Sugarcane Production.
