Job Summary
A qualified and experienced Materials Technician is required to carry out laboratory and field testing of construction materials, monitor material quality, and ensure compliance with project specifications and engineering standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Collect and sample construction materials for laboratory and field testing.
- Perform field and laboratory tests on soil, aggregates, rock, concrete, cement, and water.
- Conduct field density and compaction tests on embankment fills.
- Perform concrete quality control tests, including slump, temperature, and compressive strength testing.
- Monitor material quality to ensure compliance with project specifications and engineering standards.
- Inspect borrow pits, quarries, stockpiles, and material sources.
- Verify layer thickness, moisture content, and compaction of earthworks.
- Monitor concrete batching, placement, curing, and finishing activities.
- Inspect the installation of filters, drainage layers, riprap, and other dam construction materials.
- Record, analyse, and report laboratory and field test results.
- Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly quality control reports.
- Maintain accurate records of inspections, test results, and material approvals.
- Ensure laboratory and field-testing equipment is calibrated and properly maintained.
- Identify and report non-conforming materials and construction activities.
- Recommend corrective actions for quality-related issues and verify their implementation.
- Ensure compliance with project specifications, quality standards, and applicable testing procedures.
- Coordinate with Resident Engineers, Site Engineers, Geotechnical Engineers, Contractors, and QA/QC personnel.
- Participate in site inspections and quality assurance activities.
- Monitor compliance with health, safety, and environmental requirements during testing activities.
Minimum Requirements
- Diploma or Degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Materials Technology, Geotechnical Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5–7 years’ experience in construction materials testing, preferably on dam, road, or large civil engineering projects.
- Sound knowledge of laboratory and field-testing procedures for soil, aggregates, concrete, and earthworks.
- Familiarity with ASTM, AASHTO, BS, or SANS testing standards.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and quality control requirements.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook).
- Good report writing, record-keeping, and communication skills.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Valid driver’s licence will be an added advantage.
- Willingness to work on remote construction sites and under demanding site conditions.
POSITION AVAILABLE: SHE OFFICER
Job Summary
A qualified Safety, Health and Environmental (SHE) Officer is required to develop, implement, and monitor the project’s Safety, Health and Environmental Management Plan while ensuring compliance with all applicable SHE legislation, standards, and project requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and monitor the project’s SHE Management Plan.
- Conduct regular site safety inspections and audits.
- Identify workplace hazards and carry out risk assessments.
- Ensure compliance with occupational health, safety, and environmental legislation.
- Monitor contractor compliance with approved SHE procedures.
- Conduct safety inductions for employees, contractors, and visitors.
- Facilitate toolbox talks and safety awareness campaigns.
- Investigate accidents, incidents, and near misses.
- Recommend and monitor corrective and preventive actions.
- Ensure proper use and maintenance of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Monitor high-risk construction activities.
- Ensure safe operation of construction plant and equipment.
- Conduct environmental inspections and monitor pollution prevention measures.
- Coordinate emergency preparedness activities and drills.
- Inspect fire prevention equipment and emergency response facilities.
- Maintain SHE records, registers, permits, and statutory documentation.
- Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly SHE reports.
- Participate in project meetings and advise management on SHE compliance.
- Promote a positive safety culture.
- Liaise with regulatory authorities, clients, consultants, and contractors.
- Stop unsafe work where there is immediate risk.
- Monitor occupational health programmes.
- Ensure environmental protection measures are effectively implemented.
Minimum Requirements
- Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Management, Safety Management, Environmental Science, Civil Engineering, or a related field.
- Professional SHE certification such as NEBOSH, SAMTRAC, IOSH, or an equivalent internationally recognised qualification.
- Minimum of 5–7 years’ experience as a SHE Officer on major civil engineering, dam, mining, or infrastructure projects.
- Sound knowledge of occupational health, safety, and environmental legislation.
- Experience conducting risk assessments, incident investigations, safety inspections, and environmental audits.
- Knowledge of environmental management systems and pollution prevention measures.
- Familiarity with ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 will be an added advantage.
- Ability to prepare SHE reports and maintain statutory records.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
- Strong communication, leadership, training, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and within a multidisciplinary project team.
